Praying For Your Child’s School Year

Praying For Your Child's School Year

This is the last post in my back-to-school series. I hope you’ve enjoyed all the posts and have found great ideas and insight into making this the best school year ever for your family.

Today I want to talk about an action that should form the foundation for everything else we do as parents…prayer. I probably should have written this post first because I believe it is so vital to be praying parents if we want to see success in our child’s school year.

Yes, our children will struggle this year in some areas. And, sometimes, no matter how faithful we are to pray, difficult circumstances will arise and we may not be able to see the good in all situations.

However, that does not mean we should give up. Prayer is more than just giving God a laundry list of our needs and wants. Prayer strengthens our relationship with Him so we can learn to discern His voice and apply His wisdom when difficult situations come our child’s way.

This year I’m going to be praying this verse for my children:

And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men. Luke 2:52 NIV

I think we can take a cue from this verse and pray for four specific areas of our child’s life:

  1. Physical-Our children’s bodies are growing and changing with each passing year. Pray that they will make wise choices in what they put into their bodies. Pray that they will choose physical activities to help their bodies grow in a healthy way.
  2. Mental-Our children will have many opportunities to learn this year both in the classroom and out. Pray for the wisdom they’ll need to make the right choices. Pray that God will help their minds expand and grow to learn the knowledge presented to them this year.
  3. Social-Friends are a big part of our children’s lives. Pray that friends who will influence their lives for the good will surround them. Pray that their eyes will be opened to see the needs of others so they can be a good friend.
  4. Spiritual-Our children are able to understand more about God each year as they grow. Pray that God would speak to them in a way they can understand. Pray that they will deepen their relationship with God this year.
