Adopting the Right Mindset

In my quest to create a schedule for the summer that allows me to be productive and reach my goals, I have realized (as I have many times) that I need to limit my social media activity. I’ve mentioned before that Facebook is not my friend many times. And often, social media is a time waster for me. Not the generator of great ideas or place for community like I want it to be.

If I want to be productive I know I have to limit my time on Facebook. And not just because it’s a time waster for me. It also affects my attitude.

Just yesterday I was pondering a post I saw on Facebook. I really just wanted to respond with a “Whatever!” because I thought the person was really stretching the truth of how good their life was at that moment. If I’m really honest about it, I’d have to admit I’m really tempted to leave that kind of comment on a regular basis.

Ok, so that may not be such a bad thing, but if you think about it, this is a response that I’m having toward a “friend.” I say “friend” because all of my Facebook friends are not really close friends. Like most people, a lot of my Facebook friends are just  people with whom I have something in common.

So, yes, I think it’s pretty bad if I want to respond that way. That means that I either don’t believe or don’t care about what they are saying.

Almost as soon as I started thinking about how much I’d like to “Whatever!” that post, this popped into my head:

Finally brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me–put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you. Philippians 4:8-9

Ouch!!! Immediately I felt convicted that my flippant attitude really wasn’t the right way to respond. God showed me the better way is to think on positive things even if that means hiding posts that make me roll my eyes, or even, dare I say it…staying off Facebook for awhile.

I want to commit this verse to memory to remind me that if I will think about these kinds of things, I will experience God’s peace.

Even if that means turning off the tv and internet. Even if it means not participating in or initiating certain conversations.

Whatever it takes, I want to experience God’s peace.
