Your Work {Balanced Challenge Day 2}

How to Make Working at Home Work for You

This post is part of the Balanced challenge with Tricia Goyer—and you can join, too!

Get Balanced!

It’s Day 2 of the Balanced Challenge! Today I am focusing on what I need to do to make working from home work for me.

Yes, I consider myself a work-at-home mom. I’ve only recently begun to think that way about myself. I have been a blogger for a few years now, however I’ve only blogged about organization for about 8 months.

Even though I love being organized and all things related to organization, I resisted making my blog about organization. Tricia mentioned in the introduction to her book, Balanced, that one reason she put off writing this book is that she felt she needed to have her life together before she could encourage others.

That was exactly how I felt as I began to see that organization was going to be my main blogging topic. There is so much I feel I need to get together about my own life. My life is definitely far from perfect and organized. So, here I am trying to encourage you when I still have a lot to get together myself.

So, yes, I do consider myself to be a work-at-home mom. I don’t make much money at writing, yet. But I think the only way to move forward with my blog is to treat it like a business and I am the business owner.

That brings me to today’s challenge. Tricia asked us to think about what we need to do or change to make working at home work for us.

I am very blessed in that I have my own office space. Unfortunately, this is what it looks like right now.

I did manage to organize my closet in the office last year and have kept it neat and tidy.

For the last few months I have set up camp in my favorite chair in our family room. This is what it looks like.

Yeah, not really the best set up, is it?

I’ve decided to focus on three things to make working at home easier and more enjoyable.

1. Clean up my chair area in the family room.

2. Set up a paper management system in my office.

3. Organize my office.

Yesterday I got right to work and cleaned up my chair area in the family room. Here is what it looks like now.

The other two items are going to take a little more time to say the least. I hope to have them complete by the end of the month. I will definitely post an update when I get everything set up like I want.

Maybe you are wondering what you can do to make working at home work for you. Consider these questions:

  • Do you need to hire out some help such as a babysitter, housekeeper, or yard worker?
  • Do you have a dedicated work space? If not, what can you do to create one?
  • Do you have set “office” hours?
  • What time wasters can you eliminate from your life?

Think about what you need to do to make working at home more productive and enjoyable.

I’d love to hear from you! Comment and let me know what you are doing to make working at home work for you.

  1. Love this part of her book. Maybe you and I need to trade services. I’ll come give you some help on your office and fresh ideas and you come help me with my blog!

    1. That would be great! Normally I’m more organized than this, but life has taken over and I’ve not taken the time to put everything where it goes.
