Unstuck: How to Move Forward With Your Goals
It’s not hard to feel stuck when trying to achieve a goal. In fact, even if everything in our life is going smoothly, there will always be some obstacle to overcome.
Take this week, for example. Here it is Wednesday and I’m just now getting my first blog post written for the week. I still plan to have three blog posts this week, however it has been super hard to come up with topics to write about.
I have felt stuck in achieving the goal of blogging three times a week consistently.
I was reminded this week, though, that there are ways to get unstuck so I can move forward with my goals.
One of those ways is called the “one-degree principle.”
Simply stated, the “one-degree principle” is the smallest step you can take toward the greatest gain.
There is no three step process to applying this principle. It is simply just figuring out the next thing you can do that will move your closer to achieving your goal.
To achieve my goal of consistently writing three blog posts a week, there are several things that I need to do. However, I think the one thing I need to do most is to set up an editorial calendar based on the categories about which I blog.
That’s not the smallest step, though. In fact, having a brainstorming session to figure out what to put on the editorial calendar requires some time, thought, and patience. Even though I come up with some post ideas when I’m doing my brain dump, I really need to set aside a dedicated time to think about what I want to write.
Every time I think about making a list of posts to write I always say to myself, “If only I had some time to dedicate just to brainstorming ideas.”
So, that is my smallest step…setting aside dedicated time to think about what I want to write.
I have some travel plans coming up, so I know I won’t have time to work on brainstorming post ideas until I get back. Therefore, I’m going to set an appointment with myself the week I get back to work on those post ideas. I’m putting it on my calendar like a real appointment and I’m not going to let anything interfere with that time.
Just setting this appointment with myself has made me feel so much better. Knowing that there is a set time that I’m going to work on post ideas has lifted a huge weight off my shoulders.
I don’t know what you are struggling with today or where you may be stuck. I encourage you to think of the next thing you need to do to move forward on your goal. Make sure you boil it down to the simplest step possible. Keep doing this and before you know it you will have achieved your goal!
