Happy Memorial Day!

Today is the day we set aside to remember all those who have given their lives for our freedom. I hope you are enjoying this day while remembering its true purpose.

Memorial Day is also the unofficial kick off of summer. My kids are out of school, and we will be headed out on vacation very soon. To say we are happy that summer is here would be an understatement!

Over the weekend I began to think about some goals I have for the summer. I usually set goals at the beginning of the year, however I think the summer season offers a great opportunity to really focus on a few things I want to complete.

When I set goals at the beginning of the year, some of them are long term, meaning they’ll take most of the year to complete. Others are short term and will be completed in just a few weeks or months.

Summer goals fall somewhere in between. If you consider the summer season as June, July, and August, that gives three full months to accomplish these goals.

If you have a list of things to accomplish, why don’t you make plans to do them this summer? Even if you don’t have kids at home or have extra time off during this season, you can still make the most of summer. With daylight lasting longer and the mood more laid back, summer can be the perfect time to make headway on some goals.

Here are some tips to get you started:

1. Make sure your goals are SMART.

The basic rule of thumb when setting goals is to make sure they are SMART.






Because we are working with a three month period, you will want to make sure your goals can be accomplished in three months or less. If you don’t, you will feel like a failure if you don’t reach your goals by then.

Set yourself up for success by setting realistic goals that you can measure and will help you move forward in life.

2.  Be realistic about how many goals you can complete this summer.

I often start off the summer season thinking I have all the time in the world. I usually make a very unrealistic list of goals I’d like to complete. However, I find myself coming up short when summer is over and less than half of my goals are met.

Think about how much time you really have in the next three months. Also, consider how you work. By that I mean are you usually highly motivated to complete goals or do you tend to take your time. If you usually take time to complete your goals, chances are you won’t be much more motivated to move faster during the summer.

Keep your list short and manageable and you will see great results over the summer. Then, if you complete everything on your list and there is time left, you can always add another goal or two to tackle before summer is over.

3.  Include something fun for you and/or your family.

It can be tempting to use the summer season to catch up on things we’ve put off for months. Where is the fun in that?

I encourage you to have at least one goal that will help you and/or your family have fun this summer. It could be something as simple as going out for ice cream once a week or having a family game night.

Summer is a great time to create special memories, so don’t forget to add fun to your goals!

These are the goals I’d like to accomplish this summer:

  • Finish our upstairs renovations-this includes painting, switching rooms, and getting everything set up in the new spaces
  • Teach the kids how to use their bank accounts and the principles of spending and saving.
  • Take a couple of trips as a family
  • Launch my coaching and consulting business
  • Create a schedule that works for me that allows a balance between family life and work
