Naomi,
Thanks for your response! Let me clarify a few things. I can understand why you are questioning what I said. I did not make myself very clear. First, this post was written in response to someone who is very set on sending her kids to the school my kids go to. Her reasoning is that everyone will be just like her and she won't have to worry about anything if her kids go to school there. I just wanted to point out that just because it is a "Christian" school, not everyone will be just like her. In fact, I think it's ludicrous to want to be in a place where everyone is just alike. I think we all learn and grow by being around others with different view points. Anyway, she has experienced problems in public school that she thinks will be solved at this school. I just wanted to stress that kids are kids and there will always be those who will act out, be bullies, or just be mean. Second, I should not have said there are non-Christians at our school. It is not my place to make the call whether or not someone is a Christian. My intent with that point was that not everyone there believes in raising their kids the same way I do. My problems with some of the families is that they allowed their kids to do certain things that I don't allow my kids to do. They were much more lenient and lax in their discipline. While we might hold a lot of the same values, what we allowed our children to do varied greatly. Does that make sense?

I hope that clears up what I was trying to say! That's what I get for writing something on the fly! :) I will do better in the future to be more clear in getting my point across to my readers.

Thanks again for commenting. Your response really made me think about some things.

Jennifer,

You write, "Just because we are at a Christian school does not mean that everyone there is a Christian" and go on to say that you've had problems and did not get to know certain other families well and their values. Are you saying that only Christians have the same values as you do? Are you saying that Jewish families or Muslim families do not also have values?

I think it's important to get to know other families with whom your child associates and that you make a valid point in that respect. However, I don't think equating "Christian" with "having values" is a fair or accurate statement. Maybe you had problems with families that are not Christian, but does that mean you will have problems with every family that is not Christian? You don't say what the problems are so the reader has no way of knowing if the values you found objectionable are actually related to Christianity or might be more broadly related to Christianity and other religious traditions or even just pure human decency that has nothing to do with religion at all.

I'm Jewish. I have values. My boyfriend is an atheist. He has values. Just because those values are not "Christian" does not mean that our values are any less valid. In that respect, your statement, in what seems to be a problem for a lot of Christians in the United States, comes across as a claim that Christianity is superior to other relgiious traditions and, in that respect, is offensive.

Thank you for your comment! I agree that the culture in our school is not that diverse. As I mentioned in my post, sacrifices are made no matter what education option you choose. This is one we've made. But, it is something my husband and I are aware of, so we try to provide other opportunities for cultural diversity.

Great post. However I think that a public school is better for children as although it might not offer the type of education you're after, it most certainly offers the diversity of culture that will certainly aid them when they get older and enter the real world. I was publicly educated yet I have many friends that went to private school, but seem to lack a level of humidity towards their fellow man. I have a far larger quest for knowledge as I feel this hunger wasn't tapped at my school. Almost all of my traits as a person come from my parents, who in my eyes out weigh anything a teacher could ever read to me from a text book. After all, who wants to be wrapped in cotton wool?
